The Barton family arrived in Central Illinois in 1829 and 49 years later, the village’s first Post Office was built on their land and named after W.C.H. Barton and finally incorporated in 1903. While it was originally a mining town known for being rowdy, Bartonville industry expanded to include Keystone Steel and Wire Company, Allied Mills, and the Peoria State Hospital. While the 1950s saw the town’s population nearly triple to over 7,200, it has remained a quiet town with just over 6,000 residents.
